I Tried Cooking From Snoop Dogg's Cookbook and My Mom Would Be Proud (2024)

I recently learned that Snoop Dogg came out with a cookbook. And as someone who loves to cook, I knew I had to see for myself what kinds of recipes a world-famous rapper lives by. 🤔 First of all, let me answer the question everyone has on their minds: No, none of these recipes call for marijuana or any other psychoactive ingredient. WOMP. Now on to the recipes: They basically all looked like something I'd make eight servings of and end up finishing by myself. The five I decided would be most worth it were: pancakes, omelette, candied bacon, fried chicken, and spaghetti and meatballs. The first recipe I tackled were the pancakes, which were fluffier than any IHOP or diner stack I've ever tried. Next I made the "Billionaire's Bacon," which was basically candied bacon. If you're not already obsessed with bacon, then this recipe should do the trick. I managed to save a few strips of bacon for the omelette, the next recipe I tried. It was honestly kind of MEH, except for the fact that it was a tasty excuse to finish off the rest of the bacon. On to the dinner food. First thing on the list: spaghetti and meatballs. The pasta sauce was a solid basic sauce (nothing to write home about), but the meatballs were *Italian chef kiss* incredible. Finally, I tried the fried chicken wings, which were the most succulent wings I've had since I ate in the South. TL;DR: I can't believe it took Snoop Dogg so long to come out with a cookbook because it honestly makes SO MUCH SENSE. The recipes aren't groundbreaking, but they're really delicious AND easy to make. You can get your own copy of From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg's Kitchen here.

Of course, it's not TOO much of a surprise that Snoop would publish a collection of recipes, since he now has a cooking show with Martha Stewart.

The cookbook is called "From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg's Kitchen," and costs $14.97 on Amazon.

    BRAVO

Ya, very off-brand, Snoop. On the flip side, these are probably recipes that'd taste fabulous after lighting up. (Not that we're encouraging that 😇).

These were all classics that I had tried in the past, and I was curious what unexpected twists the 420 champion had on 'em.

The first recipe I tackled were the pancakes, which were fluffier than any IHOP or diner stack I've ever tried.

One of my favorite childhood memories is picking up a warm pancake breakfast at McDonald's on the way to church, so I had high hopes for these babies. And even though they may look just average, these actually turned out super soft and pillowy. Exactly the texture I want first thing in the morning. They were so good that after finishing this stack, I found myself ripping into individual cakes with my hands and stuffing them into my face with a speed and fervor that would indicate this were the first meal I'd had in days. (And FYI, I highly recommend this eating technique, as pancakes are one of the few sweet breads that don't crumble. ☝️)

Next I made the "Billionaire's Bacon," which was basically candied bacon. If you're not already obsessed with bacon, then this recipe should do the trick.

Like many humans with taste buds, I'm a huge fan of bacon. I love it chopped-up in my salad, as a dinner meat, as a late-night drunk snack... you get the point. So there was no way I wasn't going to like this recipe. I also knew I'd like it because it calls for brown sugar, red pepper flakes, and bacon strips, which basically encapsulates my ideal flavor profile. And the bacon did not disappoint. As if I wasn't already addicted to the stuff, adding sugar to it definitely made it hard to resist. It may have been sizzling hot, and it may have actually scorched my mouth and my fingers, but ~time heals all wounds~. And this wound was worth it.

I managed to save a few strips of bacon for the omelette, the next recipe I tried. It was honestly kind of MEH, except for the fact that it was a tasty excuse to finish off the rest of the bacon.

There are two things in the world I've eaten with more regularity than anything else: peanut butter, and eggs (if you know of a good recipe that somehow combines both, please slide into my DMs). Suffice to say, I've tried a ton of omelettes in my lifetime. And maybe it's because I slightly overcooked mine (I wanted to get my cheese extremely melty), but I thought this omelette was just okay. Honestly though, it didn't matter that the omelette itself was mediocre. This was just another excuse to eat more of that aforementioned candied bacon. If there's any other average thing you want to upgrade — a salad, a smoothie, a baked good, a Monday morning, a failing relationship — I highly recommend adding crispy, sweet bacon to it.

On to the dinner food. First thing on the list: spaghetti and meatballs. The pasta sauce was a solid basic sauce (nothing to write home about), but the meatballs were *Italian chef kiss* incredible.

If my eight-year-old cousin were to have a favorite pasta recipe, this would be it. It's sweet, oily, thick from the tomato paste, and prone to getting all over your clothing. Suffice to say, it was a pretty basic sauce (no fireworks there), but the meatballs are something I could have every day and not get tired of 'em. They're juicy, perfectly seasoned, and each includes your daily servings of red meat, parmesan cheese, and flour. I had a ball for breakfast the next day and I got through my entire to-do list. Coincidence? (Probably.)

Finally, I tried the fried chicken wings, which were the most succulent wings I've had since I ate in the South.

I'll just let you in on the secret: Snoop's special sauce for this fried chicken recipe is crumbled potato chips. I don't feel like they made a difference in the crispiness level, but the chicken was still amazing. It wasn't as crispy as the restaurant stuff (I think a second fry or bake would've helped), but as I ripped through the drumsticks, the greasy chicken juices spilling down to my elbows, and hot sauce moisturizing my entire face, I thought to myself, "I should've splurged for the family pack of drumsticks."

TL;DR: I can't believe it took Snoop Dogg so long to come out with a cookbook because it honestly makes SO MUCH SENSE. The recipes aren't groundbreaking, but they're really delicious AND easy to make.

None of the recipes required special skills or cooking techniques, and all of them could be perfected without much practice. Which is more that I can say than a lot of other recipes out there these days. Also, I'm all for cookbooks that help people make tasty, homemade versions of their favorite restaurant comfort foods so this gets my stamp of approval!
