Stockholm Metro Information
The Stockholm Metro is more than just a metro. It’s an art lover’s dream. Of the 100 stations it serves, 90 have at least one form of art on display. From mosaics to rock formations. Seven lines cover these 100 stations, and the entire network is over 100 km long. Stockholm’s underground began operating on a more modest scale in 1950, when it was officially known as the metro. Going back further into its history, it began operations in 1933, but not as a metro, rather as a pre-metro. The MTR Corporation is responsible for the operation of the entire network, which has an annual ridership of 328 million (2013).

Stockholm Metro Timings and Frequency
Metro services start at 5.00 am and run until 1.00 am. The frequency is about 10 minutes during the day and 15 minutes in the early morning and late evening. At night, the interval between trains is 30 minutes. On Friday and Saturday nights, the service is extended. There are also extra trains during rush hours, so the frequency during rush hours is around 5-6 minutes.
Stockholm Metro Fares, Tickets and Cards
The Stockholm transit system (SL) has two main types of ticket. Travelcards and zone tickets. Tickets are valid for one hour from the time they are stamped. With these tickets, it is possible to change to another form of SL public transport. However, the next journey should start within one hour, according to the time stamped on the ticket. Tickets can be purchased in cash at ticket offices or by SMS. They can also be purchased as pre-paid tickets or from vending machines. Children under 7 travel free when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Reduced fares are available for senior citizens aged 65 and over and young people under the age of 20.
Cards are also available for 30 and 90 days. A 30-day pass costs SEK 790 and the reduced price is SEK 490. A 90-day card costs 2,300 SEK and the discounted price is 1,400 SEK. Student Travel Cards are also available at reduced prices, valid for 30 or 90 days. For students, a 30-day card costs SEK 560 and a 90-day card costs SEK 1,540.
A cash ticket for a single trip costs SEK 25 and a concessionary ticket costs SEK 14. A ticket purchased at a ticket machine for zones 1/2/3 costs 36/54/72 SEK and the discounted rate is 20/30/40 SEK.
All tickets can be loaded onto an electronic chip card called the SL Access card. The minimum fee for purchasing the card itself is SEK 20. There are single use cards with zone tickets valid for 1-2 hours depending on the number of zones to be travelled. Single-use cards are also available for 1-3 days. A 1-day ticket costs 115 SEK. The reduced price is 70 SEK. A 3-day ticket costs SEK 230, while the discounted price is SEK 140.
The SL zone system consists of three zones, A, B and C. Zone A has the widest coverage and covers the innermost suburbs and the centre of Stockholm. Zone B covers the outer suburbs and Zone C the outermost and most remote areas of Stockholm County.
Travel cards are available for different periods, from one day to one year.
